Reuben was in his mid-30's at the start of the war and had several children at that time. He enlisted on 19 July 1861 at Mt. Jackson. The 136th Virginia Militia was also known as the 3rd Regiment, 7th Brigade, Virginia Militia. This regiment served from 13 July 1861 until discharged on 09 September 1861. This unit was called up again in the fall of 1861 by General Johnston. Reuben rejoined the regiment on 25 December 1861. This regiment was disbanded in the spring of 1862.

In 1885, Reuben was a farmer near Quicksburg.
